What is Ear cytology?

Ear cytology is a quick, non-invasive veterinary diagnostic test.

Step 1. Ear discharge collection
Step 1. Ear discharge collection

It involves taking a sample from the ear canal and examining it under a microscope to identify the presence of bacteria (rods or cocci), yeast (Malassezia) , parasites (ear mites) and inflammatory cells.

The sample is placed on a microscope slide and coloured.

Step 2. Staining and Drying the sample

Once slides are stained and air dried, they are carefully scanned under the microscope using different objectives depending on the size of the structures.

Step 4. Interpreting findings:

This diagnostic test allows the veterinarian to accurately diagnose the specific cause of an ear infection (otitis externa), such as a yeast or bacterial infection, which is crucial for selecting the appropriate and effective treatment, such as antibiotics or antifungals.

Cytology can also be used to monitor a dog's response to treatment, helping to determine if therapy should be continued or changed.

The entire diagnostic test takes less than 10 minutes which allows us to run it during your consultation.
